Jira doesn’t total sub-task story points on the parent work item. The Sub-task points for Jira template adds a Total row with the sum, and how much of it is done, in your own browser.
Steps
- In Skins Studio, open Explore, pick Sub-task points for Jira and click Create App.
- On Jira, open the Skins side panel from the browser toolbar. The skin is listed under On this page.
- Switch it on. Jira reloads with the Total row.
What you get
- A Total row under the Subtasks panel, styled like Jira’s own rows.
- The sum of the sub-tasks’ story points.
- The split of those points across Done, In Progress and To Do.
- How many points are done, such as “5 of 8 done”. Jira’s own “40% Done” counts sub-tasks, not points.
Limits
- The total lives on the page in your browser; it writes nothing back to the parent’s Story Points field.
- Boards, reports, JQL and velocity charts still see whatever that field holds.
- It adds up story points, not time estimates.
- Your colleagues see the Total row only if they turn the skin on too.
Other options
- Automation rule: Atlassian’s template rule writes the sum into the parent’s Story Points field. It is set up by hand and replaces the parent’s own estimate.
- Marketplace apps: add-ons that roll up estimates. An app for your Jira site, not your browser.
